The Amar Bhashar Cholochitro Utshob has returned to the University of Dhaka, opening its 24th edition with a programme that bridges classic cinema and recent box-office successes. Organised by the Dhaka University Film Society, this year’s festival began on Monday and will run until February 8.

Attention on the second day of the event has centred on a diverse slate of screenings at the Student–Teacher Centre auditorium. The day opened with Sunil Bandopadhyay’s ‘Deya Neya’, a landmark work of Bengali cinema, setting a reflective tone for the festival.

Deya Neya was followed by ‘Surjo Konna’, directed by Alamgir Kabir, which carries added poignancy following the recent death of its lead actor Jayasree Kabir.

Contemporary Bangladeshi cinema takes centre stage later in the programme. Sharaf Ahmed Jibon’s ‘Chokkor 302’, featuring Mosharraf Karim, is scheduled for the afternoon slot, while the evening screening is reserved for one of last year’s most talked-about films, ‘Taandob’.

Directed by Raihan Rafi, Taandob stars Shakib Khan in the lead role, alongside Jaya Ahsan and Sabila Nur. Its inclusion as the final screening of the day reflects both its popularity and its cultural impact over the past year.

With tickets priced at Tk50 per screening, the festival continues to position itself as an accessible platform for students and film enthusiasts alike. By combining restored classics, politically and socially significant works and mainstream hits, Amar Bhashar Cholochitro Utshob once again highlights the breadth of Bangladeshi and Bengali cinema for a new generation of viewers.
