Police have arrested Muhammad Lovelu Mollah, deputy registrar of Dhaka University (DU), for sharing a photo card on social media against the death sentence handed to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in a case filed for crimes against humanity.
Around midnight on Monday, a proctorial team accompanied by leaders of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) and hall unions, gathered in front of his residence. Later Shahbagh police rushed there and detained him.
Shahbagh Police Station’s Officer-in-charge Khalid Mansur confirmed the information to Times of Bangladesh. Asked if any case was filed, he said, “We are investigating the matter.”
In a video message recorded at his home shortly before his arrest, Mollah said, “I don’t know why I am being arrested without any crime. I have not done anything wrong. Sheikh Hasina will return to Bangladesh. Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.”
DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said, “After Sheikh Hasina’s verdict, Mollah posted a photocard of Hasina on his social media with the caption “Joy Bangla”.
He also said Mollah was “relieved” of his duty over allegations of “corruption” around four months ago.
It is known that during his student life, Mollah served as president of the Masterda Surja Sen Hall unit of the banned Chhatra League.
One of the protesters, Sadiq Sikdar, Vice President of DU’s Mohsin Hall, said, “He published a status in contempt of the court’s judgment. That is why he has been handed over to the law.”
Ducsu Secretary for Liberation War and Democratic Movement, Fatima Tasnim Juma, also confirmed the arrest.
