Marvel Studios has unveiled the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, offering the clearest look yet at the MCU’s next blockbuster while raising even bigger questions. The footage confirms returning heroes, introduces Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom and suggests the Multiverse Saga could end with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes suffering their greatest defeat before Avengers: Secret Wars.

The trailer opens at the ruined X-Mansion, where Professor Charles Xavier witnesses reality tearing apart. Marvel confirms heroes from three universes – Earth-616, the Fantastic Four’s reality and the Fox X-Men universe – will collide as Incursions threaten them all. A molecular-style diagram appears to symbolise those universes crashing together.

Downey Jr. debuts as Victor Von Doom with a Latverian accent, warning of an “unthinkable decision”. Marvel has not explained why Iron Man’s actor now plays Doom. The leading theory says he is a Victor Von Doom from another universe rather than Tony Stark, while another suggests Stark became Doom in an alternate reality. Fans also believe Doom lost his family during a collapsing universe and wants to use the multiverse to bring them back, explaining his quest for ultimate power. The trailer reinforces his threat when he stops Thor’s Stormbreaker with two fingers.

Thor appears to have become one of the last original Avengers and the team’s emotional leader, uniting Sam Wilson’s Avengers, Bucky Barnes’ New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Wakanda and other allies against Doom.

The Fantastic Four join the battle after The Fantastic Four: First Steps, but Reed Richards remains unusually quiet despite Doom being his greatest comic-book rival, leading many to believe Marvel is hiding their confrontation. Another theory focuses on Reed and Sue Storm’s son, Franklin Richards, whose comic-book ability to create and rebuild universes could make him Doom’s ultimate target. Johnny and Sue also appear to witness a massive cosmic explosion, fuelling speculation that their retro-futuristic universe may be destroyed during the Incursions.

Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming and Kelsey Grammer return as the X-Men, but Gambit fights Shang-Chi and Mystique battles Yelena Belova, suggesting the mutants and Avengers may clash before joining forces.

Chris Evans also returns as Steve Rogers despite Avengers: Endgame ending with an elderly Captain America. Fans believe this younger Steve comes from another timeline or universe, possibly the Fantastic Four’s reality, while another theory argues his presence there may have triggered an Incursion.

Loki briefly appears in TVA uniform, prompting theories that he visited Steve before becoming the God of Stories and that the mysterious TVA card could later allow Steve to contact the multiverse’s guardian.

Marvel also keeps Spider-Man, Deadpool, Wolverine, Daredevil and several rumoured characters hidden. The trailer’s repeated focus on family, sacrifice and impossible choices suggests Avengers: Doomsday may follow Infinity War by ending with the heroes’ defeat before Secret Wars reshapes the MCU.
