Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali has warned that if attacks on police keep rising, they will have to deal with the instability themselves.
He made the remarks while talking to the media on Thursday morning after inaugurating the Detective Branch’s Cyber Support Centre.
This comes after three crude bombs exploded in front of Pallabi Police Station in Mirpur on Wednesday night. Three people including ASI Nur Islam were injured in the incident.
DMP Commissioner Sazzat said, “My officer was on the street in front of the police station, he was injured by a crude bomb explosion. This breaks the morale of my officers. As a consequence, you and we will suffer. If this continues, eventually you will have to guard your own homes.”
He referred the event of crude bomb explosion as a “premeditated attack”.
Making an appeal to all, he said, “After the uprising, DMP was in a very fragile state. With great effort, much hardship, and your support, the police officials have regained their strength. Please do not try to break it.”
“We do not want to engage in conflict; we want to serve. If you proceed with the actions you intend, it will create an anarchic environment in society, in Dhaka city, in the country.”
Urging everyone not to misbehave with the police, he said, “When the police try to prevent anarchy, they are being mistreated. The way my officers have been mistreated is extremely sad. I will request that no one engages in such behaviour with my officers.”
In a radio message on 16 November, the DMP commissioner had ordered to open fire as per the law against those involved in sabotage, such as attempting to set vehicles on fire or hurling crude bombs.
He added that the police have the legal authority to open fire if sabotage is committed. There are instructions for strict enforcement of the law if sabotage is carried out by throwing crude bombs.
