Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a woman and her daughter in connection with the murder and dismemberment of a Saudi expatriate, whose remains were scattered in the capital’s Mugda area.
The victim, identified as Mokarram, hailed from Brahmanbaria district. Preliminary investigations by law enforcement agencies suggest that the murder was the result of an extramarital affair.
RAB-3 confirmed the primary suspects are Helena Begum, and her daughter, Halima.
During an operation, the elite force also recovered various pieces of evidence linked to the killing.
The discovery of the victim’s remains began on Sunday afternoon when police found seven pieces of a decomposed male body inside the basement of ‘Shahnaz Villa’ (House No 260/1, Abdul Karim Road) in the Manda First Lane area. At the time of the initial discovery, the victim’s head remained missing.
Following further investigation, the severed head was recovered at approximately 2:30am on Monday. It was found wrapped in black polythene in a narrow alleyway between two buildings (No 77 and 77/A) at the head of the East Maniknagar paved road.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Abu Raihan of Mugda Police Station confirmed that the head was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Md Jalal Uddin, Inspector (Investigation) of Mugda Police Station, said that the body was in a state of decomposition, making it difficult to immediately determine the victim’s age.
He noted that investigators believe Mokarram was murdered at a different location approximately six to seven days ago before his body was dismembered into eight pieces and dumped in various spots.
Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the areas surrounding the crime scenes as the investigation continues.
