President Md Shahabuddin on Friday said Bangladesh has returned to the path of democracy through the sacrifice of thousands of lives.

He made the remarks while inaugurating a programme marking National Jute Day at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka at around 9:30 am.

“To build Bangladesh in line with the aspirations of the martyrs, we must become more enriched in knowledge, science and technology,” he said.

On the occasion, he handed over honorary awards to nine individuals and institutions in 12 categories for their contributions to the jute sector.

National Jute Day has been observed nationally every year on 6 March since 2017 through various programmes.

This year’s theme of the day is “Build Jute Industry, Create Employment.”

The government has taken several initiatives to mark the day.

Alongside the inauguration programme, various events are being held across the country, while a nine-day Jute and Multipurpose Jute Products Fair is being organised at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy premises in the capital until March 14.

Banners and festoons were also seen on major roads in Dhaka marking the day.
