BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for the issue of adopting a Proportional Representation (PR) system in national elections to be left to the next Parliament.

Speaking to journalists on Monday after a meeting with leaders of the Christian Forum at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka, Fakhrul emphasised that Bangladesh is a non-communal country, and he expressed confidence that the people will again deliver their verdict in the upcoming national election.

He said efforts are being made to ensure a free and fair election, although “there are continuous attempts to obstruct the process.”

Regarding the demand for a PR-based electoral system, Fakhrul said, “The movement centering the PR system is still not clearly defined. Therefore, it is best to leave this matter to the next Parliament. It is there that a decision should be made about the electoral system for this election.”

Referring to the parliamentary system, Mirza Fakhrul said the BNP has proposed the introduction of an upper house, which would be a new experience for the country. However, he termed the lower house concept as unrealistic.
