Savinho marked his Tottenham debut with a late double as Spurs cruised past Charlton 5-1 in the Carabao Cup at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday.
The victory offered Tottenham a much-needed response after Saturday’s miserable 3-0 defeat at Brentford. It also gave new manager Roberto De Zerbi an encouraging night as he began his side’s cup campaign.
Mikey Moore opened the scoring with a fierce strike from the edge of the box. Dominic Solanke then doubled the advantage before half-time with a composed finish.
Kevin Danso made it 3-0 after the break when he headed home from a free-kick. Then came Savinho.
The Brazilian arrived from Manchester City in a £75 million move and needed only 11 minutes to announce himself. He cut inside from the right before firing a low shot into the near corner.
Savinho then threatened again with another brilliant run into the box. His effort struck teammate Ben Davies and found the net, giving the winger a second goal on his debut.
Charlton pulled one back through Lloyd Jones, who headed home from a corner, but Tottenham had already done enough to secure a comfortable victory.
Savinho’s arrival provided the biggest talking point of the night. The winger showed pace, close control and the confidence to attack defenders directly.
De Zerbi had also welcomed several players back into his starting XI after they missed the Brentford defeat. Destiny Udogie, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mateus Fernandes and Solanke all started, while Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven came off the bench.
Tottenham dominated possession and gradually overwhelmed a Charlton side that made 10 changes from their weekend Championship victory over West Ham.
