BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday called for an end to the ongoing debate over the implementation of the July Charter, alleging that efforts are being made to create confusion surrounding the issue.
He made the remarks while addressing the ‘July Martyr Journalist Honouring Ceremony’, organised by the National Editors Council at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), in Dhaka.
Fakhrul urged opposition parties to participate in the Constitution Amendment Committee, saying differences over the July Charter should be settled through dialogue.
He said the opportunity created by the July Movement to build a new state should now be translated into reality.
Expressing optimism, the BNP leader said the country would be able to establish a state based on justice. He also claimed that the government is working to implement commitments previously pledged by the BNP.
He stressed that Parliament should use discussion and consensus to introduce a system that would prevent future generations from resorting to violence to achieve political change.
Fakhrul also called on lawmakers from the opposition benches to move away from what he described as the practice of opposing every government initiative.
Commenting on the culture of flattery in different institutions, including the media, he said meaningful reforms are necessary to overcome the problem.
He added that it is unrealistic to expect the damage caused over the past 16 years to be reversed within a short period.
