The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a death-row convict from the capital’s Darus Salam area, who escaped from Kashimpur High Security Central Jail during the unrest in August 2024.
The arrestee has been identified as Md Abdullah Shikdar.
The information was disclosed by the battalion’s Additional Superintendent of Police at a press briefing held at the RAB-4 headquarters in Mirpur on Saturday morning.
RAB said that on 6 August, 2024, inmates carried out vandalism and set fire to parts of Kashimpur High Security Central Jail. At the time, Abdullah and several other prisoners escaped by using electric poles as makeshift ladders to climb over the jail walls. Following the incident, the prison authorities filed a case with Konabari Police Station in Gazipur.
Based on secret information, RAB-4 learned that the fugitive Abdullah had been hiding in the Darus Salam area. Later, a team of RAB conducted an operation and arrested him.
During initial interrogation, Abdullah reportedly admitted that he killed his neighbour Lutfar Rahman in Tungipara, Gopalganj, on 7 October, 2021, following a dispute over interest money. He was arrested three days after the incident on 10 October, 2021.
Later, a court sentenced him to death in the murder case. Following the verdict, he had been detained at Kashimpur High Security Central Jail since December 23, 2023. He escaped on 6 August, 2024, taking advantage of the vandalism inside the prison.
RAB said Abdullah has been handed over to Konabari Police Station in Gazipur for further legal proceedings.
