A 50-year-old man was killed and at least 20 others were injured during a violent clash between two groups over a trivial dispute in Bijoyanagar upazila of Brahmanbaria on Saturday.
The deceased, identified as Hamdu Mia, was a resident of Baigda Bandarbari in Harashpur union.
According to police and local sources, the conflict originated on Friday during a game of Ludo.
Yasin, 12, son of Abul Hossain, reportedly slapped Neerob, 11, son of Hamdu Mia. During a subsequent scuffle between the families, Hamdu Mia struck Yasin with a stick, causing a head injury to the boy.
In retaliation, supporters of Abul Hossain attacked Hamdu Mia’s house at approximately 9:30am on Saturday.
The confrontation escalated as both sides engaged in a clash involving indigenous and sharp weapons that lasted until 12:30pm. Hamdu Mia died after being struck by a sharp weapon during the violence.
At least 20 others from both sides sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. Their identities have not yet been confirmed.
Upon receiving the news, police moved into the area and brought the situation under control.
MM Rakib Ur Raja, additional superintendent of Sadar Circle Police, Brahmanbaria, said the situation is now calm. “Additional police have been deployed in the area to prevent further clashes. Legal action regarding the incident is currently underway,” he added.
