The investigation committee formed by the district administration has submitted its report on the bus accident at Daulatdia Ferry Ghat, detailing the causes of the tragedy and assigning responsibility to those involved.
Deputy Commissioner Sultana Akter confirmed the submission on Wednesday night. The report was formally handed over on Tuesday evening by the committee chief, Additional District Magistrate Uchen May.
The committee’s findings indicate that mechanical failure of the bus was among the primary causes of the accident. Uchen May stated that investigators spoke with eyewitnesses, local residents, and several relevant organizations to ensure a thorough inquiry.
The report also highlighted safety issues at the ferry ghat, including insufficient pontoon railings, underdeveloped approach roads, and the need for overall modernisation. The committee made several recommendations aimed at preventing similar accidents in the future.
Deputy Commissioner Sultana Akter said the report would be sent to the Ministry of Shipping and other relevant government offices, and legal action would follow based on the directives received.
The incident occurred on 25 March when a passenger bus of Showhardo Paribahan from Kumar Khali, Kushtia, sank into the Padma River from pontoon number three at Daulatdia Ferry Ghat, claiming 26 lives.
Following the accident, a five-member investigation committee was formed under Additional District Magistrate Uchen May, with the Goalanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer serving as member secretary.
The Ministry of Shipping also formed a six-member committee to conduct a separate inquiry.
