‘Harry Potter’-famed actor Daniel Radcliffe has voiced his support for Dominic McLaughlin, who is set to take on the role of Harry Potter in HBO’s forthcoming television adaptation, saying he believes the new lead will surpass his own performance in the part that defined his early career.
Radcliffe, who portrayed the character across eight blockbuster films, offered generous praise for 11-year-old McLaughlin, recently announced as the lead in the upcoming series based on J. K. Rowling’s novels.
Speaking during a YouTube appearance, Radcliffe reflected on his own time in the role, admitting he was learning on the job throughout much of the franchise. He said he now looks back on his performances with greater kindness and less embarrassment than he once did, acknowledging how young he was when production began. He added that he is confident McLaughlin will excel and even outperform him.
The new HBO series has prompted mixed reactions since its announcement. Some fans have welcomed the prospect of a longer form adaptation that could remain closer to the original books, while others have questioned the need for a reboot less than 15 years after the film series concluded. Casting decisions have also sparked lively debate online.
Radcliffe urged audiences and media outlets to allow the new generation of actors to make the roles their own without constant comparison to the original trio. He suggested that if people genuinely wish to protect the young cast, they should refrain from repeatedly drawing parallels with him and his former co-stars.
In the original films, Radcliffe starred alongside Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. The franchise began in 2001 with ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ and concluded in 2011 with ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’. The series went on to inspire the spin off ‘Fantastic Beasts’ films.
HBO’s new adaptation is expected to span eight seasons, with the first instalment scheduled for release in 2027 and subsequent series planned annually.
