Two gatekeepers responsible for the level crossing have been suspended following the train–bus collision in Cumilla that left 12 people dead early Sunday.
Bangladesh Railway (Eastern Zone) has formed two separate committees to investigate the incident. The Cumilla district administration has also set up its own inquiry committee, which has been asked to submit a report within three working days.
The district administration announced that families of the victims will receive Tk25,000 each as financial assistance.
The accident occurred around 3am at the Padua Bazar World Road rail crossing in Jangalia Kochua, when a passenger bus was struck by the Dhaka-bound Chattogram Mail train.
The bus’s middle section was mangled. The Mamun Paribahan vehicle was travelling from Chapainawabganj to Lakshmipur.
Twelve passengers—seven men, two women, and three children—died on the spot.
Police and fire service teams rushed to the scene to carry out rescue operations.
