After a seven-month halt, the state-owned Chattogram Urea Fertiliser Limited (CUFL) in Anwara has resumed urea production early Sunday.
The production resumes around 3:30am, Mohammad Jasim Uddin, the CUFL’s Manager (Administration) and Head of the Administration Department, to Times of Bangladesh.
The factory was shut completely from April 11 due to a gas supply suspension by Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company.
Bangladesh’s annual demand for urea stands at 2.6 million tonnes. Of this, the CUFL and other BCIC factories supply roughly 1 million tonnes, while the remaining 1.6 million tonnes are imported at high cost.
Established in 1987 on the southern bank of the Karnaphuli river, the CUFL was built using Japanese technology. Its current daily production capacity is 1,200 tonnes of urea and approximately 310,000 tonnes of ammonia annually.
