The Chattogram Port Authority has launched its first-ever week-long “Port Safety Week-2026” initiative, marking a significant step toward strengthening safety and emergency preparedness at the country’s principal seaport.
The programme was formally inaugurated on Sunday morning at the Port Building premises under the theme “Safe Port, Prosperous Country.”
Commodore Ahmed Amin Abdullah, acting chairman and member (harbour and mmarine) of the Chattogram Port Authority, inaugurated the event as chief guest by releasing balloons. Member (Administration and Planning) Md Samimuzzaman attended as special guest.
An awareness rally involving port officials and employees was later brought out on the port premises.
According to a press release issued by the port authority, the primary objectives of the initiative are to enhance safety awareness among workers and officials, adopt modern and effective accident-prevention measures, strengthen emergency response capacity, and reinforce safety standards in line with international practices.
The programme also aims to encourage broader participation in environmental protection and resource conservation.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Commodore Ahmed Amin Abdullah said the initiative was designed to ensure safer port operations and maintain the uninterrupted flow of the country’s economic activities.
He noted that the programme covers not only the protection of port facilities but also the safety of workers, employees, stakeholders, equipment and other valuable assets.
Special guest Md Samimuzzaman said the port authority has significantly upgraded its surveillance systems, firefighting technology and emergency response mechanisms to address modern-day challenges.
He added that a dedicated disaster management action plan has also been introduced to minimise losses during emergencies and natural disasters.
At the opening session, Lieutenant Commander Syed Sajjadur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Port Security Department, outlined the week-long activities in his welcome address. He described the workers and employees as the “lifeblood” of the port and said strict instructions had been issued to ensure the mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE) according to job responsibilities.
He further said that the programme includes special safety briefings, mock drills and awareness workshops throughout the week, enabling officials and employees to gain practical experience and improve their ability to respond swiftly and effectively during emergencies.
Beyond the port area, the initiative also extends to educational institutions operated by the port authority. Students of port-run schools, madrasas and colleges will receive basic training on disaster preparedness and first aid.
In addition, leaflets containing important traffic signs and emergency instructions are being distributed to improve internal traffic safety within the port area.
