Bangladesh faced questions over its strategy as coach Javier Cabrera struggles to lead a team filled with expatriate players.
The national team now features players like Hamza Choudhury, Shamit Shome, Fahamedul Islam, Zayan Ahmed, and Quazem Shah. The squad feels like a small gathering of expatriates. Despite this mix, Cabrera has struggled to create a winning plan against stronger teams. His strategies have sparked doubts about his capability.
Captain Jamal Bhuiyan has faced questions about the team and the coach. He was the first to introduce expatriate players to the national side. Even as captain, Jamal rarely starts matches. This has caused frustration, but he still respects the coach’s decisions. Jamal also holds an AFC A-level coaching diploma. When asked about Cabrera’s ability to handle players like Hamza and Shamit, he avoided giving a direct answer at a press conference.
Before the friendly against Nepal, Jamal said, “This is not my decision. The management makes these decisions. I am a player, and I will remain a player.”
Cabrera has often faced criticism from fans. Some supporters have even boycotted Bangladesh matches under his leadership. Responding to the criticism, Cabrera said, “I heard the tickets for the India match sold out in four minutes. Criticism is normal, and I accept it. But I believe people still support the team. Tomorrow’s match is our chance to show that beating India is possible.”
The team now looks to the upcoming matches as an opportunity. Fans hope to see the squad prove themselves, while the coach and captain focus on building confidence and unity on the field.
