Bangladesh sports fans are in for a busy day today, with the country competing in five different disciplines across cricket, football, hockey, archery, and table tennis. It is a rare day when all three major team sports take place together.
The action began in Sylhet, where Bangladesh continued their Test match against Ireland. It is the third day of the match, and play started in the morning. After two sessions of cricket, attention will turn to Dhaka for hockey.
At 2 PM, Bangladesh will face Pakistan in the World Cup qualifying playoff at the Maulana Bhasani Stadium. Both the Test and the hockey match are expected to finish around the same time.
Later in the evening, the focus will shift to football. The Bangladesh national football team will play a friendly match against Nepal at 8 PM at the National Stadium. Fans will have a short break before switching from hockey to football under the lights.
The cricket team stays busy throughout most of the year, but footballers like Jamal Bhuyan get only a few international windows. Bangladesh plays about seven to eight matches across those limited FIFA windows. Hockey has even fewer chances to take the field. Since the 2023 Asian Games, today marks the senior team’s first appearance.
Outside of the team sports, Bangladesh will also compete in individual events. At the Army Stadium, Moni will play in the women’s compound singles semifinal of the Asian Archery Championship. Earlier in the day, Himu and Bannya will aim for gold in the compound mixed event.
In Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh, the country’s table tennis pair Khai Khai and Javed Ahmed will face Bahrain in the mixed doubles final of the Islamic Solidarity Games. By reaching the semifinals, Bangladesh has already confirmed at least a bronze medal in the event.
It is a rare sporting festival for Bangladesh, as five disciplines are set to be in action on the same day across three cities and two countries.
