Cricketer Tofayel Ahmed Raihan has been granted bail after surrendering before a Dhaka court in a rape case involving allegations that a young woman was assaulted at a hotel in Gulshan on the promise of marriage.

The order was passed on Sunday by Judge Md Abdul Moktadir of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8.

Public prosecutor Zakir Hossain said the accused appeared before the court and sought bail. “We opposed the bail application,” he said. “After hearing both sides, the court granted bail on a bond of Tk 5,000.”

According to the case statement, the complainant first came into contact with Tofayel through Facebook in January last year. The two later communicated regularly via Facebook Messenger, and their interaction developed into a friendship.

The woman alleged that Tofayel proposed a romantic relationship, which she initially declined. The complaint states that he later assured her of marriage and entered into a relationship on that basis.

It is further alleged that on 31 January, Tofayel took the woman to a hotel in Gulshan under the pretext of going out and raped her. The first information report (FIR) claims that he assaulted her on multiple occasions afterwards, repeatedly promising to marry her.

Following the alleged incidents, the woman filed a rape case with Gulshan Police Station on 1 August.

The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md Samiul Islam of Gulshan Police Station, submitted the charge sheet to the court on 30 November.

After the case was filed, Tofayel had earlier secured bail from the High Court. On Sunday, he surrendered before the trial court and was granted bail again.
