Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has warned that stringent legal measures will be taken against anyone found engaging in extortion or overcharging passengers during the Eid journey.
He said this year’s travel for homebound passengers would be safer and more comfortable than in previous years.
The minister made the remarks while inspecting an under-construction terminal and river port in Narayanganj.
He stated that comprehensive preparations have been completed and the relevant ministries have been provided with the necessary directives to ensure a seamless journey.
To mitigate traffic congestion during the festive rush, the minister noted that advance preparations have been implemented for the Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Chattogram highways. He further emphasised that those found guilty of collecting extra fares from passengers will face trial under criminal law.
On waterways, Rabiul Alam said the government was coordinating with relevant ministries to address river pollution and curb extortion.
He added that the long-pending Narayanganj double-line project would be expedited.
Referring to port logistics, he said reports indicated essential commodities, including wheat, were being held in lighterage vessels beyond scheduled unloading times.
He warned of legal action against those responsible for creating any artificial crisis through hoarding.
“Some evidence has already been found and explanations have been sought from the concerned parties,” he said.
The inspection was attended by State Minister for Shipping Habibur Rashid, Shipping Secretary Nurun Nahar Chowdhury, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority Chairman Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mostafa and other senior officials.
