A Dhaka court has directed the freezing of 39 bank accounts belonging to Md Obayed Ullah Al Masud, former chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC, amid the ongoing investigations into alleged corruption and money laundering.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz issued the order on Thursday, following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to the ACC application, the move comes after the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) shared information indicating suspicious financial activities involving Masud.
The ACC is currently investigating allegations that he misused his positions in several banks, including as former managing director of Rupali Bank PLC and Sonali Bank PLC, to misappropriate funds and engage in irregular transactions.
The ACC stated in its plea that multiple accounts under Masud’s name and others connected to him had received significant deposits and conducted questionable transactions.
“Preliminary findings suggest possible money laundering activities, making it necessary to temporarily freeze these accounts to facilitate further investigation,” the petition noted.
The court accepted the ACC’s request and ordered all concerned financial institutions to immediately suspend transactions from the listed accounts until further notice.
