A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered the freezing of 10 bank accounts belonging to Kazi Inam Ahmed, a director of Gemcon Group. The accounts reportedly hold a combined balance of Tk1.19 crore.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Foyez passed the order following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The application was filed by case investigating officer and ACC Assistant Director AKM Mortuza Ali Sagar.
According to Riaz Hossain, the court’s bench assistant, the same court had previously imposed a travel ban on Kazi Inam on 18 January last year. The ACC’s application stated that a case was filed against Kazi Inam on 16 September last year at the ACC Integrated District Office, Dhaka-1.
He is accused of acquiring and possessing assets worth Tk32.66 crore beyond his known sources of income, an offence under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.
Additionally, the accused is facing allegations of money laundering through suspicious transactions totalling Tk74.78 crore across 14 bank accounts. These transactions involve the transfer and conversion of funds, which are punishable offences under Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.
The case is currently under investigation. During the probe, information regarding movable assets held in Kazi Inam’s name was uncovered.
The ACC informed the court that, according to reliable sources, there is a possibility the accused may transfer ownership of these assets or go into hiding abroad. Consequently, the commission argued that freezing the bank accounts is essential for the interest of the ongoing investigation.
