The censor certificate of ‘Contract Marriage’, starring Moushumi, has been suspended just two days before its scheduled theatrical release following a written complaint from one of the film’s actresses.
The film, directed by Hasan Jahangir, had received censor clearance in March and was due to release in cinemas on Friday.
Bangladesh Film Development Corporation Managing Director Masuma Rahman Tani confirmed the matter, saying the certification was suspended after actress Zeba Jannat submitted a written complaint.
“She claimed she had signed a contract for a television drama, but the producer later planned to release it as a feature film without informing her,” Tani said, adding that the certificate was suspended due to an alleged violation of contractual terms.
The issue had previously been raised by Moushumi and her husband, actor Omar Sani, who alleged that a project initially intended as a drama was later turned into a full-length film without their consent.
Speaking earlier about the project, Moushumi said Contract Marriage was originally conceived as a one-hour drama centred on the struggles and complex relationships of a woman living abroad.
“She comes to America, struggles to survive and enters into a contract marriage, but cannot escape it,” the actress said while describing the story.
Moushumi added that she agreed to work on the project at Hasan Jahangir’s request while staying in the US. Although the shoot was initially planned for two days, she said she extended her schedule to three days to complete the work.
According to the actress, the director later approached her again, saying the footage exceeded the duration of a one-hour drama and suggesting it be converted into a telefilm instead.
Moushumi said she did not object to the idea of making it a telefilm, provided payment arrangements were adjusted accordingly. She also agreed to participate in an additional day of shooting for extra scenes.
Despite repeated attempts, Hasan Jahangir did not respond to requests for comment regarding the suspension of the film’s certificate.
Alongside directing the project, Hasan Jahangir also plays a central role in the film alongside Moushumi and Zeba Jannat.
