Container, cargo, and ship handling at Chattogram Port recorded notable growth in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, showing a strong performance despite global and domestic challenges.
According to the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA), around 9.28 lakh TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers were handled during July–September of fiscal year 2025-26, marking an increase of 12.24 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
Cargo and ship handling also saw robust growth over the same period. The port handled about 3.3 crore tonnes of cargo and 1,031 ships between July and September, registering year-on-year increases of 13.88 percent and 9.22 percent, respectively.
In a press release, the CPA stated that overall port operations have continued to expand steadily throughout the calendar year. From January to September 2025, the port handled a total of 2.57 crore TEUs of containers, registering growth of 4.98 percent.
Over the same nine months, cargo handling reached 10.3 crore tonnes while 3,161 ships were managed, representing growth of 11.70 percent and 10.37 percent, respectively.
At the port’s New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT), operated by Chittagong Dry Dock Limited (CDDL), performance reached record levels. Between July and September, the NCT handled 3.43 lakh TEUs of containers, up 13.88 percent year-on-year.
Ship handling at the terminal also rose sharply, with 178 ships managed during the quarter, notching the highest-ever volume and growth in the NCT’s history at 17.11 percent.
Commenting on the performance, CPA Secretary Omar Faruk noted that despite disruptions caused by global conflicts, geopolitical tensions, transport strikes, customs delays, and temporary shutdowns, the port’s operations remained resilient.
“Thanks to the collective efforts of our officials, workers and stakeholders, port activities have continued smoothly. Both container and cargo handling have increased, and export-related growth remains positive,” he said.
Faruk added that several new infrastructure and digitalization projects are progressing rapidly, strengthening the port’s capacity and operational efficiency for future growth.
