The Commonwealth Secretariat has reaffirmed its commitment to democratic practice, human rights and the rule of law across member states, following appeals for the release of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
In a letter on Wednesday to British MP Zac Goldsmith, Commonwealth Secretary‑General Shirley Botchwey acknowledged receipt of his communication concerning Khan and the Commonwealth Charter.
The Commonwealth Secretariat underscored its role in upholding shared principles and assured continued constructive engagement with Pakistan and all Commonwealth member countries.
The correspondence comes amid international appeals urging Islamabad to free Imran Khan, who has remained in detention facing legal proceedings since his removal from office. The Secretariat’s response highlights its position of supporting governance standards.
On 22 August, Zac Goldsmith, brother of Jemima Goldsmith who is former wife of Imran Khan, sent a letter to the Commonwealth secretary‑general urging intervention with Islamabad. He cited Pakistan’s Supreme Court orders on Khan’s medical care that were not fully implemented.
Goldsmith requested assurances including access to trusted doctors, unredacted medical information, family contact, and unhindered legal representation. He warned that if such guarantees were not met, Commonwealth mechanisms should be considered to uphold member‑state commitments.
Accounts from Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma, described prolonged isolation and inadequate medical attention, while UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Dr Alice Jill Edwards and Khan’s physician Dr Faisal Sultan also voiced concern.
Goldsmith’s letter stressed that Khan’s detention conditions were incompatible with internationally recognised humane standards and pressed for due process in criminal proceedings.
