A college student was hacked to death and her mother and two younger siblings were seriously injured in an attack over a financial dispute in Jatrabari on early Tuesday.
The incident took place around 4am at a house in the Kajla Bhanga Press area.
The deceased has been identified as Diya,20, a student of Shaikh Burhanuddin Post Graduate College. Her mother Nusrat Jahan Mousumi ,40, brother Moaj Ahmed ,15, and sister Joya ,12, were also severely injured.
Relatives said they are undergoing treatment at Anwar Khan Modern Hospital. Mousumi’s left wrist was severed, and she along with her daughter Joya is in the ICU.
Driver Billal Hossain said contractor Musa, who was renting a room in their house and working on construction, entered the house over a dispute regarding outstanding payments. He spoke for a long time before apologising and then attacked Mousumi with a machete. When the children rushed to save her, they were also attacked.
Locals rescued the victims and took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where Diya was declared dead.
Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Raju said Musa has been detained in an injured condition and sent to hospital. Police are investigating whether there were any other underlying motives beyond the financial dispute.
