The Bangladesh Coast Guard has recovered banned electric fishing nets and Chinese seine nets valued at nearly Tk201 crore in a major raid in Munshiganj.
Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan confirmed the operation on Monday.
Acting on a tip-off, the Coast Guard Composite Station Padma conducted a special drive from 6am to 8am in the area near Padma Bridge Toll Plaza under Padma North police station.
During the operation, two suspicious trucks were searched. Authorities seized a total of 5.72 crore metres of prohibited electric nets and 708 Chinese seine nets, with an estimated market value of Tk200.54 crore.
The confiscated nets were destroyed in the presence of the Senior Fisheries Officer of Louhajong Upazila.
The truck drivers and helpers were released on bail after giving written assurances, while the trucks were also freed.
Lieutenant Commander Sujon said the Coast Guard will continue such operations to protect the country’s fisheries resources.
