Bangladesh and India have exchanged detained fishermen and fishing boats under the supervision of their coast guards.
The Bangladeshi fishermen later returned home to their families.
Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq confirmed the matter on Friday afternoon.
The exchange followed a series of detentions in late 2025.
The Bangladesh Navy detained two Indian fishing boats along with 23 fishermen on 18 and 23 October 2025 for illegal fishing inside Bangladesh waters near the Bangladesh–India international maritime boundary.
On the other side, the Indian Coast Guard detained five Bangladeshi fishing boats and 128 fishermen on 16, 17, 19 and 30 November 2025 on allegations of fishing in Indian waters.
The two governments later reached a bilateral understanding through initiatives taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to exchange the detained fishermen.
Under the decision, the Bangladesh Coast Guard handed over the 23 Indian fishermen along with two fishing boats to the Indian Coast Guard at the Bangladesh–India International Maritime Boundary Line on Thursday.
At the same time, the Indian Coast Guard released 128 Bangladeshi fishermen along with five fishing boats, which the Bangladesh Coast Guard received.
On Friday, at around 11:00 am, the Bangladesh Coast Guard handed over the Bangladeshi fishermen along with their boats to their families at Coast Guard Base Mongla.
