Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested two members of a kidnapping ring involved in abducting the son of a Malaysian expatriate and demanding a ransom of Tk10 lakh.
The arrested individuals were identified as Ariful, 30 and Sunny, 22. Both are residents of Safirkandi (East Para) village under Bancharampur Police Station in Brahmanbaria. A team from the CID’s Dhaka Metro North Division apprehended them from their village on the morning of 9 June 2026.
According to case documents, the victim, 21-year-old Muntashir, is the son of Motahar Hossain, who has been working in Malaysia for the past four to five years.
On 11 January 2026, Muntashir received a phone call from an unknown number claiming his father had sent Tk50,000. He was instructed to collect the money from the Jaynal Market area under Dakshinkhan Police Station.
Believing the information, Muntashir went to the location, where he was forced into a private car and driven to a building in Pallabi, Mirpur. He was confined and assaulted by the abductors, who took Tk20,500 in cash from him and transferred Tk8,500 from his bKash account.
The kidnappers subsequently contacted Muntashir’s family, demanding Tk10 lakh and threatening to kill him if the demand was not met. Following the report of the abduction, the police initiated an investigation.
Sensing the police presence, the kidnappers abandoned Muntashir in a CNG auto-rickshaw in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of Agargaon late on the night of 12 January before fleeing. The victim’s mother later filed a case at Dakshinkhan (DMP) Police Station on 15 January 2026.
CID officials revealed that Ariful and Sunny had previously lived in Malaysia. As part of a pre-planned scheme, they returned to Bangladesh shortly before the incident to execute the kidnapping and intended to flee back to Malaysia after collecting the ransom.
Investigations indicate that the duo and their associates have been involved in similar criminal activities, in both Bangladesh and Malaysia. Records also show that Sunny is an accused in a separate case filed with Bancharampur Police Station.
During primary interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the crime. The CID is currently in the process of sending them to court with a seven-day remand prayer to identify and arrest other members of the syndicate. The Dhaka Metro North Division continues to lead the investigation.
