Police recovered the body of a six-year-old girl from the stagnant water of an elevator shaft in an under-construction building in Hatirjheel on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Tahedi Akter, daughter of Md Liton Mia from Alirgaon village in Cumilla’s Titas Upazila.

According to the child’s uncle, Md Swapan Mia, Tahedi went out to play on Tuesday night while her mother was performing Taraweeh prayers. Her father returned home around11:30pm and began searching for her when she could not be found. He eventually discovered the child lying in the water accumulated in the elevator shaft of a neighbouring building under construction.

She was immediately rushed to a local hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. The body was subsequently taken back to the family residence. Upon receiving the information, police recovered the body from the house and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy.

Golam Mortuza, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hatirjheel Police Station, stated that no injury marks were found on the body. While it is initially suspected that the child died after accidentally falling into the shaft while playing, the OC maintained that the exact cause of death would be confirmed once the autopsy report is received.
