Fire Service on Tuesday recovered the body of a child dragged away by a crocodile in the pond adjacent to the shrine of Khan Jahan Ali (Rh) in Bagerhat.
Fakir Tarikul Islam, chief attendant of the shrine, confirmed the incident.
The victim was identified as Fatema Akter, 7.
Eyewitnesses said around 8:30pm Monday, a crocodile inhabiting the shrine pond dragged Fatema while she was bathing at the women’s ghat. Despite screams from Fatema and onlookers, no one dared to intervene.
Locals launched a rescue operation, later joined by Fire Service, police, and district administration.
Fatema was the daughter of a woman residing at the shrine. Authorities said details of her identity were not immediately available.
Burial arrangements will be decided following discussions with the deputy commissioner.
