A three-and-a-half-month-old baby girl has died of measles-like symptoms at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, taking the number of child deaths at the facility to 17 this year.
The hospital is seeing a fresh surge in admissions, with 28 more children admitted in the last 24 hours until 9:00am on Sunday, pushing the number of patients in the measles isolation ward to 84.
A shortage of beds has forced many patients to receive treatment on floors and in corridors, exposing pressure on the hospital’s capacity.
The infant, a resident of Trishal upazila, had been admitted on April 21 with measles symptoms.
She died on Saturday afternoon from pneumonia and respiratory failure, said Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Associate Professor and measles isolation ward focal person Md Golam Mawla.
The hospital has admitted 856 children with measles symptoms between March 17 and Sunday morning, he said.
Of them, 755 children have recovered and been discharged, while 17 have died, he added.
Another 33 children were discharged in the last 24 hours after recovery, reflecting a steady turnover alongside rising admissions, he said.
