Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Sunday honoured the martyred intellectuals on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day.
He placed a wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur at 7:22am to pay his respects.
Following the wreath‑laying, the chief adviser observed a moment of silence, standing in quiet reflection to honour the distinguished sons of the nation. A ceremonial contingent of the Bangladesh Armed Forces presented a state salute as the bugle played the last post.
After the tribute, he greeted the chief justice, advisers of the interim government, senior civil and military officials, wounded freedom fighters, and relatives of the martyred intellectuals.
In the final days of the 1971 Liberation War, these eminent individuals were brutally killed in an attempt to intellectually paralyse the nascent Bangladesh.
Earlier, President Mohammed Shahabuddin also paid homage by placing a wreath at the same memorial at 7:04am.
