Activities of the banned student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were reported in Jamalpur and Satkhira on Friday, a day before 15 August, the death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
In Jamalpur, police detained two alleged Chhatra League activists for reportedly putting up a banner at Government Ashek Mahmud College to mark the death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The detainees were identified as Maruf Hasan Jihan, 20, of Pathalia area in Jamalpur municipality, and Mohammad Simanta Sheikh, 19.
Jihan is reportedly a joint general secretary of the college Chhatra League unit, while Simanta is an activist of the organisation.
Police detained the two on Friday afternoon and later sent them to court, said Nazmus Sakib, officer-in-charge of Jamalpur Police Station.
According to local residents, the banner was put up near the college’s main gate late Thursday night.
It featured photographs of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, along with the slogan, “From grief to awakening, from awakening to return.”
The banner was reportedly placed over protest writings that had been put on the wall during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Following the incident, the college administration issued show-cause notices to four night guards over alleged negligence of duty.
Police have also collected CCTV footage from the campus.
Leaders of the district and college units of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) said the activity was carried out under the cover of darkness and claimed their activists were monitoring the campus to prevent similar incidents.
Attempts to contact Government Ashek Mahmud College Principal Professor Md Shaukat Alam Mir and Teachers’ Council General Secretary Professor Mohammad Abdullah Al Jaber for comments were unsuccessful.
Flash procession in Satkhira
In Satkhira, a group of alleged Chhatra League activists brought out a flash procession on Friday, calling for the return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and marking 15 August.
The procession took place around noon near the bypass road in Satkhira town and was reportedly led by Chhatra League leader Mrinal Mondal.
Witnesses said a group of activists suddenly gathered in the area and brought out the procession, chanting slogans related to 15 August and Sheikh Hasina’s return.
The procession moved a short distance before the participants dispersed.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Aminur Rahman said he was not aware of the procession when contacted.
He said the officer-in-charge of the concerned police station had been instructed to look into the matter and take necessary legal action.
Police surveillance has also been increased around the bypass road and adjoining areas following the incident, the police official said.
