The Premier League delivered another dramatic weekend as Chelsea collapsed late against Brighton, Manchester United faltered at Brentford, and Manchester City roared back into form with Erling Haaland at the heart of the action.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea looked in complete control despite the absence of injured playmaker Cole Palmer. Enzo Fernández’s header rewarded their dominant first-half display. Yet, for the second league game in a row, a red card turned their afternoon upside down.
Early in the second half, Andrey Santos gifted possession to Diego Gómez, who burst forward before tangling with Trevoh Chalobah just outside the area. Referee Simon Hooper initially waved play on, but VAR intervened, sending Hooper to the monitor. After review, he deemed the foul “clear” and showed Chalobah a red card. Chelsea were down to ten, and the momentum shifted.
Brighton equalised with 14 minutes left through Danny Welbeck’s emphatic header, before chaos unfolded in stoppage time. First, Chelsea escaped conceding a penalty when Malo Gusto’s high boot made contact with Yankuba Minteh’s head. That reprieve counted for little. Maxim De Cuyper struck in injury time before Welbeck added his second, sealing a stunning 3-1 win and leaving Stamford Bridge in shock.
If Chelsea’s collapse was painful, Manchester United’s trip to Brentford was no less damaging. United, buoyed by their win over Chelsea last week, were flat once again. Brentford surged into a two-goal lead inside 20 minutes thanks to Igor Thiago’s brace. Benjamin Sesko quickly pulled one back with his first United goal, but the visitors never looked convincing.
Their golden chance came in the second half when Bruno Fernandes stepped up for a penalty after a lengthy four-minute VAR check. Referee Craig Pawson had booked Nathan Collins for pulling back Bryan Mbeumo but refused to upgrade it to a red. Fernandes eventually struck his kick, but Caoimhin Kelleher saved brilliantly. It was Fernandes’ second miss from the spot this season and a costly one.
The miss drained United’s belief, and Brentford capitalised in stoppage time when Mathias Jensen lashed home a superb third to seal a deserved 3-1 victory. The defeat extended United’s winless run away from home to eight league games and dropped them into the bottom half, while Brentford leapfrogged them with three priceless points.
Elsewhere, Manchester City answered their critics with a convincing 5-1 win over Burnley to climb into sixth. The hosts were handed a gift when French defender Maxime Estève sliced into his own net while trying to clear after Jeremy Doku’s shot was parried. Burnley, under Scott Parker, fought back through Jaidon Anthony’s scrappy equaliser before the break, but City’s quality told after half-time.
Matheus Nunes put City back in front with a superb volley from Erling Haaland’s knock-down. Nunes then turned provider, drilling a cross into the area which eventually deflected in off Estève for his second own goal of the night. Haaland ensured a comfortable finish with two clinical late strikes, continuing his blistering scoring run and underlining City’s renewed momentum after a shaky August.
