OpenAI has introduced a new generation of apps that users can interact with directly inside ChatGPT. The company announced the update on Monday, October 6, calling it a major step towards making ChatGPT more interactive and useful for everyday tasks.
These apps can be discovered naturally in conversations or called by name. They respond to normal text commands and include interactive tools that appear directly in the chat window. For example, a user can say, “Spotify, make a playlist for my party this Friday,” and ChatGPT will bring up the Spotify app to create it instantly.
According to OpenAI, these apps “fit naturally into conversation” and are designed to help users “create, learn, and do more.” Developers can now start building their own apps using the new Apps SDK, which is available in preview. OpenAI said the SDK allows developers to reach over 800 million ChatGPT users.
The apps are being launched today for all logged-in ChatGPT users outside the European Union across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. The first pilot partners include Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. These apps will be available in English in markets where their services already operate. More partners are expected to join later this year.
OpenAI said developers can test their apps in Developer Mode inside ChatGPT and that app submissions for review and monetization will open later in 2025.
ChatGPT will also suggest relevant apps based on the conversation. For instance, while discussing travel, it might bring up the Expedia app, or if a user is looking for a home, the Zillow app could appear with listings shown on an interactive map.
“The magic of this new generation of apps is how they blend familiar tools like maps, playlists, and presentations with new ways of interacting through conversation,” OpenAI said in its statement.
