Chapainawabganj is witnessing a surge in demand for ice apple as residents seek relief from the relentless heat and quench their thirst.

Busy markets and key city intersections are crowded with buyers, giving rise to a seasonal buzz around the fruit.

With the start of summer, the region’s markets are filled with a variety of seasonal fruits, but this year ice apple is attracting particular attention. Even though mango sales are yet to begin in full, demand for ice apple has risen several times, alongside lychees and other fruits.

A visit to New Market, the road in front of the municipality, and other prominent intersections reveals temporary stalls set up by vendors selling ice apple. People from all walks of life flock to these stalls to find some respite from the heat.

Arif, a vendor from Boropukuria village selling in New Market, said, “I farm during the rest of the year, but selling ice apple during the season provides extra income. This year’s intense heat is boosting sales.”

Jewel Rana, a seller from Mohipur in front of the municipality, said a bunch of four ice apples costs Tk30, while individual pieces sell for around Tk7.50. He added that daily sales range between 700 and 1,000 pieces.

Vendors explained that each palmyra tree yields two to three sap bunches, which are collected from villages and brought to the markets. Depending on yield, a tree is bought for Tk500 to Tk1,000.

Another vendor, Rahman, noted, “Some customers prefer slightly softer ice apple, others harder, but most favour young and tender pieces.”

Liton Ali, a local resident, said, “Demand rises sharply in hot weather as ice apple keeps the body cool. Prices are slightly higher than last year.”

Chapainawabganj Civil Surgeon Dr AKM Shahab Uddin said the fruit is not only refreshing but also healthy. “It contains high water content, minerals, and vitamins. Rich in antioxidants, it protects body cells and quickly cools the body. People with cold-related conditions should consume it in moderation,” he added.

Chapainawabganj Department of Agricultural Extension Deputy Director Md Yeasin Ali said, “Ice apple helps prevent dehydration. It is rich in calcium, iron, and antioxidants, benefiting human health and supporting the rural economy.” He added that palmyra trees planted along roadsides reduce lightning risks while contributing to environmental protection and the local economy.
