A man was beaten to death following a dispute over collecting water from a tap in Chapainawabganj, with police detaining seven people in connection with the incident.

The killing occurred around 2pm pm on Tuesday in the Prantikpara rail slum area of Chapainawabganj municipality.

The victim, Nasir Uddin Basu, 45, son of Akhtar Hossain Munshi of Alinagar Bhutpukur in the municipal area, had been living in the slum as a tenant.

Police recovered the body and sent it to the Chapainawabganj District Hospital morgue for post-mortem, Officer-in-Charge of Sadar police station Nur-e-Alam confirmed.

He said Nasir Uddin had an altercation with a neighbouring woman, identified as Nuri, over taking water from a tap. During the argument, she allegedly called several people by phone, who later arrived and beat Nasir Uddin with sticks, leaving him critically injured. He died at the scene.

The officer said seven people had been detained in connection with the incident.

Duty doctor at Chapainawabganj District Hospital Umme Habiba said the victim was brought in dead and that initial observations suggested head injuries may have caused the death, adding that the exact cause would be known after the autopsy.
