Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Wednesday described the recent change in the governorship of Bangladesh Bank as a “normal process,” saying the new government is making adjustments in line with its priorities and policy direction.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Wednesday, he said the changes were not confined to the central bank alone.
“A new government has its own programmes, preferences and policy thinking. To implement those, changes will be made where necessary. This is a normal process,” he said.
Responding to a question on the grounds for replacing the governor, the minister said there was no specific consideration beyond the government’s policy priorities.
“Changes have taken place in many areas, not just at Bangladesh Bank, and will continue if needed,” he added.
Earlier, the government removed Ahsan H Mansur from the post of governor and appointed Md Mostaqur Rahman as his successor.
According to a notification issued by the Financial Institutions Division of the Finance Ministry, Mostaqur Rahman has been appointed governor for a four-year term from the date of joining, under Article 10(5) of the Bangladesh Bank Order, 1972 (President’s Order No. 127 of 1972), subject to relinquishing all employment ties with other institutions and organisations.
The notification said he will receive salary and other benefits from Bangladesh Bank in accordance with the terms of a contract signed with the government.
Other conditions of service will be determined by the agreement.
The order was issued in the public interest and took immediate effect.
Ahsan H Mansur, executive director of the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRI), had been appointed governor in August 2024 for a four-year term under the Bangladesh Bank Order, 1972.
He was removed from the post after serving around one and a half years.
