The newly elected leadership of the Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) officially assumed responsibility on Monday as the chamber formally handed over duties to the new Board of Directors elected through direct voting after a long interval.
The handover ceremony was held at the Chamber office at 1pm, where Chamber Administrator and Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Md Motaher Hossain formally transferred responsibilities to the newly elected board.
The event marked the beginning of the new leadership’s formal journey following the victory of the United Business Forum panel in the biennial Chamber election. Former Chamber President Amir Humayun Mahmud Chowdhury and BGMEA Director and Asian Group Managing Director Mohammad Abdus Salam attended the event as special guests.
Chairman of Seacom Group Mohammad Amirul Haque was elected President of the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Md Amjad Hossain Chowdhury was elected Senior Vice President, while Mohammad Mashiul Alam Swapan became Vice President. Speaking at the handover ceremony, the newly elected leaders pledged to work collectively to create a more business-friendly environment, accelerate industrialisation, attract investment and safeguard the interests of Chattogram’s business community.
A total of 18 out of 24 director posts were contested in the election, while the remaining six directors had already been elected unopposed.
In the Ordinary Group, those elected were Md Amjad Hossain Chowdhury, Mohammad Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, Kamal Mostafa Chowdhury, Aman Ullah Al Chagir, Abu Haider Chowdhury, Mohammad Shafiul Alam, ASM Ismail Khan, Md Golam Sarwar, Asad Iftekhar, Mohammad Shahidul Islam Chowdhury, Mohammad Habibur Rahman and Shahidul Alam.
Elected from the Associate Group were Mohammad Alauddin Al Azad, Mohammad Mashiul Alam Swapan, Sarwar Alam Khan, Md Zahidul Hasan, Md Nurul Islam and Md Selim Noor.
In the Trade Association Group, Mohammad Amirul Haque, who led the panel, along with SM Saiful Alam and Mohammad Akhter Parvez, secured victory. Meanwhile, Mohammad Sajjad Un Newaz, Mohammad Monir Uddin and Afsar Hasan Chowdhury were elected unopposed from the Town Association Group.
The biennial election of the Chamber was held on 23 May, at the World Trade Center in Agrabad. However, the election took place in the presence of candidates from only one panel after one of the two main competing alliances boycotted the polls. The Sammilito Babosayye Parishad panel, led by SM Nurul Haque, officially withdrew from the election on 22 May, a day before voting took place.
