A case has been filed over an attack and vandalism of a Jagannath University (JnU) bus in Singair, Manikganj.
Bus driver Md Sazzad Hossain filed the case with Singair Police Station on Tuesday night, naming one person and 10 to 12 unidentified others as accused.
The named accused is Md Kawsar, 25, son of Abu Bakkar Siddique of Bhumdakshin village in Singair upazila.
According to the case statement, the university’s registered bus, Kaliganga, was carrying 14 to 15 students to Manikganj around 5pm on Tuesday.
When the bus reached the Bhumdakshin bus stand area in Dhalla Union on the Hemayetpur-Singair-Manikganj regional highway, Kawsar and several unidentified people allegedly stopped it while carrying iron pipes and bamboo sticks.
They then allegedly attacked the bus and smashed windows on both sides, causing an estimated Tk3.50 lakh in damage, according to the case statement.
Several students and the driver were injured in the attack.
Three female students – Purnima, 21, Akhi Akter, 21, and Rinvi, 19 – were reportedly injured by shards of broken glass.
Bus driver Sazzad Hossain and student Uday Chakraborty were also allegedly assaulted when they tried to stop the attackers.
Singair Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mazharul Islam said an accident had occurred on the Singair road, but the JnU bus was not involved.
“Local people attacked the bus due to a misunderstanding,” he said. Police have launched efforts to arrest those involved, the OC added.
