At least 10 students of Jagannath University (JnU) and the driver were injured after a university bus came under attack in Singair upazila of Manikganj on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident took place in the Bandakshin Bazar area, where the attackers also smashed the windows of the university’s ‘Kaliganga’ bus.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Singair and Manikganj, according to the university administration.
Two students suffered serious injuries – one sustained a head injury, while another was injured when broken glass pierced his chest.
Mahid Hossain, transport secretary of the JnU Central Students’ Union, said he was heading to the scene and had initially learned that several people, including the bus driver, had been injured.
JnU Transport Administrator Tareque Bin Atique said the attack apparently followed an altercation over overtaking an auto-rickshaw.
“According to information we received from locals, some students got off the bus and pushed the auto-rickshaw driver after he allegedly refused to give way. Local residents then attacked the bus,” he said.
However, Singair Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mazharul Islam said the attack was linked to a separate road accident in the area.
“Police have confirmed that the JnU bus was not involved in the accident,” he said.
The OC said police would take legal action if the university authorities filed a case.
Tareque Bin Atique said several people allegedly involved in the attack had been identified.
The university has contacted the local administration and is preparing to file a case, he added.
