Bangladesh fell to a dramatic 4-3 defeat against Hong Kong China in their AFC Asian Cup qualifier, despite producing their brightest attacking display in over a year. The match swung repeatedly, with Bangladesh scoring a late equaliser but ended in heartbreak for the home side, who conceded a decisive goal in the dying minutes.

It was the first time since June 2023 that Bangladesh scored three goals in a match, yet it was not enough to secure even a point. With the result, they remain bottom of Group C with only one point, while Hong Kong China sit top with seven.

Head coach Javier Cabrera took full responsibility for the defeat, stating, “The whole team takes the blame, but mainly I do. Now our focus must shift to the upcoming matches. If we beat Hong Kong China in the next fixture, we will be only three points off the top of the group.”

Cabrera’s words reflect a mathematical possibility rather than a realistic one. Bangladesh face a difficult path ahead, with two of their remaining three matches to be played away from home. They face Hong Kong China again on 14 October, then travel to Singapore in March. Their only remaining home fixture is against India on 18 November.

Cabrera praised his side’s first-half performance, calling it “one of our best 45 minutes”, and insisted that Hong Kong China were not technically superior. However, he acknowledged that errors within the team cost them dearly. “We paid for multiple mistakes in the match,” he said.

This is not a new problem for Bangladesh. The team once again struggled with defensive lapses and conceded from set-pieces, including goals in stoppage time of both halves. These persistent issues raise questions about the Spanish coach’s ability to address long-standing weaknesses.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong China’s coach Ashley Westwood remained calm throughout the match, even after the score was level at 3-3 in stoppage time. The former Manchester United youth defender explained, “Belief in ourselves and a never-give-up attitude kept us going. That belief paid off.”

With players such as Rafael Merkies and Everton Camargo in his ranks, Westwood had the quality to back up his confidence. For Bangladesh, though, it was another painful reminder of how far they still have to go to compete at this level.
