Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has expressed grief over the passing of noted local government expert and researcher Professor Tofail Ahmed.
In a condolence message, he described Tofail as a pioneer in Bangladesh’s local governance studies and a visionary reformer who led the Local Government Reform Commission under the 2024 interim government.
Yunus recalled his lifelong dedication to decentralization, accountability, and democratic practices. Author of about 20 books and numerous articles, Tofail’s work will remain a valuable guide for future generations.
Tofail was former professor of the Chattogram University (CU) and served as a Local Governance Adviser at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bangladesh.
He prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed heartfelt sympathy to his bereaved family. Tofail Ahmed passed away at a hospital in the capital last night at the age of 71.
