Bloodshed and fear cannot prevent Bangladesh’s march towards democracy, said Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
He added that the assault on Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi is an attack on Bangladesh’s very existence and democracy. Yunus assured that the miscreants who shot Hadi will not escape justice.
Yunus made these remarks while addressing the nation on Victory Day on Tuesday. He began the address at 6pm, which was broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV) and BTV World.
During this speech, the chief adviser called upon everyone to thwart any attempts at disrupting the 13th national election slated for February.
A prospective independent candidate for Dhaka-8, Hadi was shot in the head on 12 December. He was airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical treatment on Monday. He is currently receiving care at Singapore General Hospital.
Earlier in the day, the chief adviser paid tribute to the Liberation War martyrs by placing wreaths at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar. After laying the wreaths at 6:56am, he stood in silence for a while as a mark of respect.
At the time, a smart contingent from the Army, Navy and Air Force rendered a state salute, accompanied by a mournful tune played on the bugle. The chief adviser later signed the visitors’ book preserved at the memorial.
The chief justice, advisers of the interim government, chiefs of the three services, freedom fighters, diplomats and senior civil and military officials were present on the occasion.
The nation is observing Victory Day today through various programmes to honour those who laid down their lives for the country during the Liberation War in 1971.
