A student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Shreeshanto Roy, has been sent to jail following allegations of raping a fellow student and making offensive comments about women, including those wearing burqas and hijabs.

The court issued the order on Wednesday afternoon after a case was filed by BUET authorities. Earlier in the day, Shreeshanto Roy was detained and taken to Chawkbazar Police Station.

Shreeshanto is a student of the 21st batch in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a resident of Ahsanullah Hall.

Screenshots of his alleged comments on the social media platform Reddit, including the rape allegation and derogatory remarks about women and Islamic attire, went viral, sparking outrage on campus.

In response, BUET students staged protests in front of the Directorate of Student Welfare, demanding justice.

Amid mounting pressure, the BUET administration temporarily suspended Shreeshanto Roy’s studentship.
