The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has trained small and medium enterprise (SME) entrepreneurs on raising capital from the stock market, as regulators seek to expand market-based financing options for smaller businesses.
A two-day training programme titled “Training on Capital Raising by Public Offer for SME Entrepreneurs” was jointly organised by BSEC and the SME Foundation on 28 and 29 July at the BSEC multipurpose hall in Dhaka, according to a statement. A total of 40 entrepreneurs participated in the programme.
Opening the training, BSEC Commissioner Md Nafiz Al Tarik said SMEs play an important role in economic growth and the programme would help entrepreneurs understand how they can raise funds from the capital market to expand their businesses.
He said businesses often rely on bank loans for financing, but such borrowing creates pressure for regular repayment of principal and interest. Capital market financing can provide entrepreneurs with an alternative way to raise funds and support long-term growth, he added.
SME Foundation Deputy Managing Director Farzana Khan said the training was designed to provide practical knowledge about the process of raising funds from the capital market and encourage entrepreneurs to become part of the market ecosystem.
Participants said the knowledge gained from the programme would help them explore opportunities to connect their businesses with the capital market in the future.
Officials from BSEC, Dhaka Stock Exchange, Central Depository Bangladesh Limited and issue management firms provided training on different aspects of public offerings, market requirements and related procedures.
Certificates were distributed among participants after completion of the two-day programme.
