A nine-year-old boy died after he was allegedly subjected to a brutal assault involving compressed air at an auto-rickshaw garage in Palash upazila of Narsingdi on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Ramim, son of trader Ripon Mia from Gazaria Charkarardi village in the upazila.
According to police and locals, the incident took place at a battery-run auto-rickshaw garage in Gazaria Bazar. Ramim had gone to the market in the morning and entered the garage around 9am.
Police said a rickshaw driver allegedly used an air pump to force compressed air into the child’s body, leaving him critically injured.
Hearing the boy’s screams, locals rescued him and took him to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. Doctors later referred him to Dhaka for advanced treatment after his condition deteriorated.
Ramim died at a private hospital in Dhaka at around 4:15pm while undergoing treatment.
Md Rakib Askari, a doctor at the emergency department of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, said the child suffered severe internal injuries caused by the forced entry of high-pressure air.
Palash Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahed Al Mamun said police rushed to the area after receiving information that the body had been brought home.
He said further legal action would be taken based on a written complaint from the family, while efforts are underway to arrest those involved.
