A man was critically injured after being shot by miscreants during a trial run of a speedboat in the Padma River at Bheramara, Kushtia, in the early hours of Friday.
The victim, identified as 38-year-old Shariful Islam Robi, is the bodyguard of Monirul Islam Moni, the owner of Moni Park. Robi hails from Muslimpur Fakirpara village in Bahadurpur Union.
According to victim and local sources, Monirul Islam Moni had recently purchased a speedboat that had remained out of service for an extended period. After hiring specialist engineers from Dhaka to install a new engine, the boat was taken to the Padma River near Golapnagar Baggaripara at approximately 3am on Friday to test its effectiveness.
During the trial, a group of miscreants reportedly lying in wait opened fire on the speedboat. One bullet pierced Robi’s left arm and exited through the left side of his chest, leaving him severely wounded.
He was initially rushed to Bheramara Upazila Health Complex. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Kushtia Medical College Hospital. For advanced medical care, he was later sent to Dhaka at around 3:00 pm on Friday.
Muhammad Zahedur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bheramara Police Station, confirmed the incident and stated that police have already visited the scene. He added that legal action would be initiated once a written complaint is filed by the victim’s side.
Shariful Islam, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Laxmikunda Naval Police, also confirmed that police have inspected the site and are monitoring the situation. He noted that no formal complaint has been lodged yet, but necessary legal steps will be taken upon receiving one.
