BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has affirmed that the party is committed to implementing the ideals of its founder, Ziaur Rahman, in Bangladesh.
Speaking on Monday morning after paying tribute at the grave of the party’s founder, Ziaur Rahman, to mark his 90th birth anniversary, Fakhrul expressed confidence that the Election Commission (EC) is capable of conducting the upcoming polls competently.
“We believe the EC is capable of managing this election competently,” he said, adding that the commission’s performance has been satisfactory so far.
He said Ziaur Rahman had turned Bangladesh’s economy at a time when the country was described as a “bottomless basket” and that his name must always be remembered in the country’s political history.
He said Shaheed Zia declared Bangladesh’s independence and ensured freedom of the press and the judiciary, adding that the BNP remembers him every year and continues to move forward by following the path he showed.
Referring to the student-mass uprising, the BNP leader said the announcement of the 12 February election came through the movement and that what he described as “fascist” Hasina had fled.
He said a renewed pledge has now been taken to rebuild the country’s damaged economy and to institutionalise democracy, and that through this process the BNP would implement the ideals of Ziaur Rahman in Bangladesh.
On the cancellation of nominations of BNP candidates, Mirza Fakhrul said problems during the scrutiny process are not new.
He reiterated that the party has conveyed its concerns to the Election Commission and expressed confidence in the commission’s ability to conduct the election properly.
